Over the past month we have had a buck resting in our back yard. He comes and lays in the shade under the pines. He’s beautiful, with a wonderful large rack. To watch him walk and jump the fence is majestic. It makes me feel good to watch him, to know he found a safe place to hang out, a place where he can come and just forget the world, be free from the insanity,
Yesterday my wife was driving down one of the major roads in our area. There he was on the side of the road – dead. He had been hit by a car in an area where the road is wide, where you can see what is up ahead, in an area where the speed limit is low. It should not have happened. On top of that there was a couple that was cutting off his head, it will be a nice trophy – it was a score for this couple.
Today we drove by and confirmed it was our buck. It makes me sad. Sucks!
Humanity is brutal. We’re careless and will go to grotesque extremes to satisfy our desires.
Reminds me of Brian. We provided him love and safety but, once he left the yard he was at the mercy of the world. We prepared him to take on the challenges. He understood the world better than I do on most days. In the end though, he got crushed by life’s brutality. Even mighty bucks can’t overcome an out of control human in a speeding car. Sucks!
